Here is a breakdown of Oakland sidewalk stamps by their shape. If you find a poor-quality or partial mark, this list may help you decipher it. (Hand-drawn marks don’t qualify as stamps, so they aren’t listed here.)

The first eleven categories refer to a mark with an outline around the text, followed by two special cases (horseshoes and fancy marks). Marks listed under “escutcheon” are mostly shield-shaped, but other odd shapes including regular shapes with an indent or cutout also go here.

The remaining categories are text without outlines, although they may also have curlicues and such.
